Brillante's Story

Brillante Early Learning Center's journey towards high-quality, low-cost childcare.

Past

Our local communities are in urgent need of high-quality, free- to low-cost, full time childcare. An early feasibility study on this project concluded that Explora can help address unmet education and care needs in Bernalillo county, starting early to build career pathways for New Mexicans and supporting early STEAM learning. This is the foundation of Explora’s Cradle through Career strategic initiative

Present

Explora is opening a pre-Kindergarten classroom in the museum in August of  2023.  This classroom is the pilot program for the bigger Brillante Early Learning Center that is under development. The Brillante classroom at Explora is currently open to CNM-student families and Explora staff and will provide full time care with a Reggio Emilia-inspired, STEAM-rich curriculum.

Future

Fundraising and program and architectural planning for Brillante Early Learning Center is well underway. As New Mexico’s only museum-based, STEAM education center, Brillante Early Learning Center will be housed in a new facility, across the street from Explora on 18th Street and serve over 140 infants, toddlers, and  young children and their families with full time care, preschool, and community learning and resources. We are developing a partnership with CNM to serve as a lab school and mentorship site for future early childhood educators.

Brillante Early Learning Center is ready to be built. Explora has the land in the Sawmill Old Town Neighborhood; an architect is in place; 60% of construction costs have already been funded through private and public means.
